Nonprofit Marketing Plans

Nonprofit Marketing Plans: Turning your passion into a plan

I recently took a position as Director of Development and PR with a relatively small local nonprofit. Though I'm confident I'll be able to work effectively with the organization, I'm only 24 and my background is primarily in politics. I've managed a political campaign and have a degree in polisci, so my technical knowledge of marketing is somewhat limited. Does anyone have suggestions on reading material I could pick up that is specific to marketing and nonprofit management, or any general advice that might aid in my transition?

I will give you my list of books that I believe are excellent. But I would also have you go to my nonprofit site and download the 16 page e-book labeled Connect with Permission and the other on Referral Marketing.

Now the books:
Self-serving:
One Page Business Plan for Nonprofits
Dust Tape Marketing
Others:
Forces for Good by Crutchfield
The Joy of Fundraising by Axelford
Common Interest, Common Good by Sagawa/Segal
The Charismatic Organization by Sagawa, Jospin
Tribes by Seth Godin(I am in this one)

Of course, these have a marketing, planning sense but that should come as no surprise. Also, feel free to contact me about the next webinar I will be holding. It is held at a minimal cost and I think it might be useful to you. I have updated it for 2009.
